Today, 20th February 1994, the people of Germany proudly launched the country's flag carrier, Deutsche Lufthansa. The name of the company is derived from Luft (the German word for "air"), and Hansa (after Hanseatic League, the powerful medieval trading group).

The airline is the world's second-largest airline in terms of overall passengers carried, operating services to 4 domestic destinations and 15 international destinations in 15 countries in Europe. Currently Lufthansa services 19 destinations and plans to add a whole lot more!

Lufthansa's registered office and corporate headquarters is in Deutz, Cologne, with its main operations base (Lufthansa Aviation Center [LAC]) and primary traffic hub at Frankfurt Airport in Frankfurt, Germany.

The airline proudly launched with 3 Boeing 737-300 aircraft, all configured in 2 classes - short-haul Business Class and short-haul Economy Class. On short and medium-haul routes passengers will enjoy plenty of room. In Economy Class, the slim construction of the seat backs provides greater leg room, making it easier for passengers to stretch their legs. In Business class passengers will find top-quality leather seats in elegant shades of grey, a blue carpet and a harmonious colour scheme throughout are just a few of the details which give an attractive and modern feel to the cabin interiors of Lufthansa's short and medium-haul aircraft.

Lufthansa CEO, Wolfgang Mayrhuber declared today a huge celebration day for the people of Germany and promised to connect the country with the world! When asked about the airline's next steps, he smiled and proudly replied 'Watch this space!'

Lufthansa would like to proudly announce the expansion of their current fleet, routes and destinations. Airline CEO, Wolfgang Mayrhuber personally made the announcement today at Deutsche Lufthansa AG
Lufthansa Aviation Centre
where a large group of aviation industry members and world wide press were invited to attend the 'reveal'.

The big reveal was indeed 'big' as Lufthansa revealed their aviation centre to the public for the first time. 'Lufthansa is characterised by its open culture. We fly all over the world. We connect people and countries. We are a transparent company that places great value on communication. Our aim was for all that to find expression in the new Lufthansa Aviation Center – and that has also succeeded. Stefan Lauer, Chief Executive Aviation Services and Human Resources said today.

The building can be divided into three elements – concourses, gardens and corridors – which could also be described as the houses, squares and streets of a town. This helps staff to feel that they belong to groups. In the home areas, everything that is needed for work and well-being during the day is available.

The gardens act as the lungs of the building and enable it to breathe. They provide a sense of calm in contrast to the traffic noise from outside. At the same time, they symbolise the earth’s vegetation and thus the openness and the cosmopolitan outlook of the Lufthansa Group.

The special technical features of the building can best be described by means of the gardens. They act like lungs, enabling the building to breathe. All staff members can open their windows and enjoy a breath of fresh, good-quality air. Moreover, the atriums and the gardens prevent the temperature from becoming too hot or too cold.

This 6 storey 'beauty' with its 50,000 sq. metres of glass, providing 1,800 jobs and showcasing 9 beautiful gardens was the perfect setting for Lufthansa's second biggest press release since commencing operations earlier this year.

Presenting Lufthansa's next steps into the world was Jürgen Weber (Head of Supervisory Board), Wolfgang Mayrhuber (CEO), Stefan Lauer (Aviation Services and Human Resources) and Stephan Gemkow (CFO) and proudly announced the airline's fleet expansion from 3 aircraft to 7 aircraft in total, with another 2 on order.

The airline added another Boeing 737-300 to their existing Boeing 737 fleet and introduced the BAe-146-100, manufactured in the United Kingdom by British Aerospace. This new aircraft forms part of the new Lufthansa Cityline, a wholly owned subsidiary of Lufthansa and member of the Lufthansa Regional network.

Lufthansa Cityline will operate regional routes as well as short 'city hops' around Europe. The new aircraft has been configured in an all economy class, providing 94 passengers with world class comfort and German luxury in the skies.

Lufthansa and it's Star Alliance members will operate out of Terminal 2. The terminal is operated by Terminal-2-Betriebsgesellschaft (German for Terminal 2 Operating Company), which is owned by Flughafen München GmbH (60 %) and Lufthansa (40 %).
